Jet flame lighters with a flame the wind cannot blow out

A jet flame lighter mixes the gas in the burner itself and blows it out under pressure. That gives you a blue, focused flame that is much hotter than an ordinary yellow flame and that does not blow out.

Jet flame, jetflame and turbo all mean the same thing. The difference is in the number of jets, the finish and whether you refill it.

Which jet flame lighter suits your use?

An ordinary flame needs still air and burns incompletely, which is why it is yellow and sooty. A jet flame takes its oxygen in on the inside. That makes the flame blue, clean and hot enough to get thicker material going as well.

Jet flame lighter with a blue flame under pressure

One to four jets

One jet is precise and economical, enough for a candle, a cigar or a fuse. Three or four jets form a wide hot cone that works faster on charcoal, kindling or a fire pit.

Adjustable flame and a lock

A thumbwheel lets you take the heat back, which is pleasant for fine work. A lock keeps the flame burning without holding the button down, and that helps when you are at it for a while.

Refillable or disposable

The cheapest jet flame lighters are disposable. The rest you refill with butane gas, and those last for years. Look at the tank size as well, because four jets use considerably more gas per second.

Tip

A jet flame is a good deal hotter than an ordinary flame, so keep your distance and never point it at yourself or others. Refill with butane gas at 45 PSI.

Buying a jet flame lighter at PyroProducts

This category holds jet flame lighters with one to four jets, from pocket size to table model, singly and in value sets. Nearly all of them refillable with butane gas.

The blue flame wins wherever there is a draught: at the barbecue, the fire pit, on the campsite and in a draughty hallway. If it mainly needs to cope with wind, have a look at the storm lighters. If you only want models you refill, those are with the refillable lighters.

When comparing, look at the number of jets, whether the flame is adjustable, the tank size and whether it has a lock. Which models hold up best outdoors is in the best storm lighters.

If you are unsure about the number of jets, look at what you light most often. For a candle or a cigar one jet is enough and more economical, and for coals or kindling four jets are noticeably faster.

Frequently asked questions

What is a jet flame lighter?

A lighter that blows the gas through a small nozzle under pressure and mixes the air in the burner itself. That makes the flame blue, focused and much hotter than an ordinary yellow flame, and it does not blow out.

Is jet flame the same as turbo?

Yes. Jet flame, jetflame, turbo and torch are used interchangeably for the same technique. The difference between models is in the number of jets, the finish and whether you can refill it.

How hot does a jet flame get?

A butane jet flame runs considerably hotter than an ordinary lighter flame. Enough to get wood, charcoal and fuses going quickly. So keep your distance and never point it at yourself or others.

Which gas do you use for a jet flame lighter?

Butane gas at 45 PSI. At lower pressure or with less pure gas the flame burns unevenly and the valve clogs up sooner. Refill calmly and wait a minute before you light it.

One jet or four, which do I choose?

One jet if you want to work precisely: a candle, a cigar, a fuse. Four jets if it has to be quick over a larger surface, such as charcoal or kindling. Four jets do use more gas.

Why is my jet flame lighter sputtering?

Usually there is air in the tank or the gas is too cold. Wait a minute after filling. If it keeps sputtering, let the remaining gas escape and refill with pure butane gas.
