Gas torches for soldering pipes and repairs

Soldering does not need a big flame but a focused one. A gas torch with a jet flame blows the butane out under pressure, so you put the heat exactly on the joint and not on everything around it.

For soft soldering on a copper pipe that is more than enough. The choice lies in the flame strength, whether you can lock it, and whether the nozzle reaches the pipe.

Which gas torch do you use for soldering?

A yellow flame heats a wide area and leaves soot on the copper, so the solder bonds less well. A blue jet flame burns clean and puts the heat on a small area, so the joint comes up to temperature quickly and the pipe around it stays cool.

How hot does it need to get

Soft soldering on a copper water pipe happens at a few hundred degrees, and a butane torch manages that easily. For brazing thicker material you need a different fuel; butane does not get there.

Being able to lock the flame

Soldering needs two hands: one for the torch and one for the solder. A lock that keeps the flame burning without pressing the button is therefore not a luxury but a necessity.

Reaching the pipe

Pipes often sit against a wall or in a corner. Look at the length of the nozzle and at models that stay upright, so you can put the torch down in between without switching it off.

Tip

Never work with an open flame right next to insulation or wood without a heat shield, and keep something to extinguish with at hand. Refill the torch with butane gas at 45 PSI.

Buying a gas torch for soldering at PyroProducts

This category holds gas torches suitable for soldering work: models with an adjustable blue jet flame, a lock and a size you take along to the job. All refillable with butane gas.

The same torch also does other work where you need focused heat, from heat-shrink tubing to seized bolts. If you are after the heavier kitchen models, have a look at the gas torches. If you just want the blue flame and nothing more, those are with the jet flame lighters.

When comparing, look at the flame strength, whether it can be locked, the length of the nozzle and the tank size. If the flame stays uneven, the gas is usually the cause: that is in lighter not working any more.

If you mainly work on pipes behind a panel or in a crawl space, pick a model that stays upright when you put it down for a moment, and check how far the nozzle sticks out of the body.

Frequently asked questions

Can you solder a copper pipe with a gas torch?

For soft soldering on a copper water pipe a butane torch with a blue jet flame works fine. Clean the copper first and use flux, then the solder is drawn into the joint by itself.

Which flame do you need for soldering?

A blue jet flame. It burns clean and puts the heat on a small area. A yellow flame heats too wide and leaves soot on the copper, so the solder bonds less well.

Can a butane torch braze as well?

No, butane does not get there. Brazing requires a much higher temperature and therefore a different fuel. For soft soldering on pipes and electrics a butane torch is more than enough.

Why is a lock important when soldering?

Because you need two hands: one for the torch and one for the solder. With a lock the flame keeps burning without you holding the button down.

Which gas goes in?

Butane gas at 45 PSI. At lower pressure or with less pure gas the flame burns unevenly and the valve clogs up. Fill calmly and wait a minute before you light it.

What should I watch out for in terms of safety?

Never work with an open flame right next to insulation or wood without a heat shield, make sure there is ventilation and keep something to extinguish with at hand. Let the torch cool down after use before you put it away.
